Volunteers are needed

English At Large has approximately 250 learners waiting to be matched with adult tutors. We need volunteers to teach English literacy in a one-on-one setting. As an English literacy volunteer, you will receive ongoing support from staff and access to in-service opportunities.

To become an English literacy tutor, you will need to attend both an orientation and our 15-hour training workshop. During the training, volunteers will receive instructional materials.

The next round of tutor training workshops will be held in Fall 2010. Fill out a volunteer intake form to be notified when the new dates and locations are announced.

Fall 2008 Open House Reception

Come hear directly from our learners and our volunteers why the work we do is so important and rewarding. Our fall Open House reception offers a relaxed, low-pressure opportunity to learn more about English At Large and the people we serve. All are welcome to attend and meet the executive director, board members, volunteers, and learners. This is not a fundraiser.

Special feature: We will preview our new 9-minute video showcase, featuring the faces and voices of our volunteers and learners!

English At Large needs conversation group leaders to facilitate new groups in the fall. Conversation group leaders give English learners a comforting space to polish their English speaking skills. Groups are open to intermediate and advanced English learners.

If you enjoy igniting conversation about current events, American pop culture, and history, this is the perfect volunteering position for you. After completing the four-hour training, volunteers will start their conversation groups.

Learn about volunteering and tutor training

Interested in becoming a volunteer but not sure where to start? Come to a Volunteer Orientation. Each two-hour session includes a description of English At Large's volunteer opportunities, a question-and-answer session with English At Large staff, and a chance to sign up for a 15-hour Volunteer Tutor Training Workshop or other volunteer roles.
