EventsThe English At Large Volunteer Network offers regional volunteer group meetings on a quarterly basis. Meetings can include guest speakers, informal trainings, and the opportunity to meet other English At Large volunteers in you area. Tapping into Technology: Region 4 Volunteer MeetingSusan Paju, a reference librarian at Acton Memorial Library, will give an introduction to two language programs available at the library: Rosetta Stone and Mango Languages. She will do a brief presentation of literacy resources available through the library's network. After Susan’s presentation, tutors will have an opportunity to ask questions and share ideas and information on useful websites. The library has two wireless computers available for literacy-related uses within the library. Rosetta Stone is loaded on one of them. The computers are kept at the Reference Department. If you would like to borrow a computer, you will need to leave a photo ID at the Reference Desk. If you have a wireless laptop, you are welcome to bring it. Lynne Osborn, a veteran tutor with English At Large, will try to compile web site information for volunteer tutors. Help your learner develop their voice by discovering different ways to increase their vocabulary knowledge at the next volunteer network meeting. Dr. Denise Segal will share guidelines for teaching word meanings based on learners’ level in English, and she will provide guidelines for broadening vocabulary knowledge and increasing depth of knowledge of word meaning in different situations. Tutors will also take part in simple activities for teaching word meaning and building vocabulary. Dr. Segal is a volunteer tutor with English At Large and a speech/language therapist, who specializes in language development and language-learning difficulties.
